What’s new on Shelter Island for summer 2022

The North Fork is full of fun, but there’s a whole other island to explore.

Take the ferry to Shelter Island this summer and you’ll find an array of delights old and new. From renovated hotels and restaurants to a new bagel shop with a colorful twist, Shelter Island is positively hoppin’.

The Chequit’s grand reopening

Just in time for its 150th birthday, The Chequit is gearing up for a grand reopening this summer. The hotel, revamped but with nods to its history, has beautiful suites, rooms and several dining options. The Heights Café and Wine Bar, as well as sushi restaurant Weakfish, run by Greenport fave Chef Noah Schwartz. We sampled the menu last fall — check out our thoughts HERE.

The Pridwin is back

The Pridwin Hotel and Cottages, celebrating its 95th anniversary, will reopen this summer with a complete renovation of its 33 rooms and 16 private cottages. The hotel is now being run by Cape Resorts, which owns Baron’s Cove in Sag Harbor. There will also be a 100-seat and Crescent Bar with a panoramic view of Crescent Beach. READ MORE

An Eccentric new bagel shop

Eccentric Bagel has opened in the former Eagle Deli space. The only bagel shop on Shelter Island, Eccentric Bagel lives up to its name with a whimsical interior design by Ricky “TeeVee” Saetta of Times Vintage fame and menu full of both classic bagels and more unique flavors like rosemary. Things to do around the island this summer

Havens Farmers’ Market runs Saturdays through Sept. 3 from 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. at Shelter Island History Center, 16 South Ferry Road.

The annual Shelter Island 10k and 5k returns on June 18, rain or shine. Register ahead of time.

Sunshine & Fireworks is hosted by the nonprofit Shelter Island Fireworks on July 9 at Crescent Beach, with a July 10 rain date. Find out more.

Shelter Island Beach Primer

Crescent Beach, also known as Louis’ beach, faces Southold and Greenport and is the site of the annual fireworks celebration. There are lifeguards and restrooms available.

Wades Beach is wide and spacious with lifeguards and restrooms. It’s on the south side of the island and fronts Shelter Island Sound.

Shell Beach is a narrow beach that goes into the Shelter Island Sound. There’s no lifeguards or amenities here, but you’ll find warm waters and might spot piping plovers.
